Is ITC Bored with Board Test?
نویسنده
چکیده
If you look at the mix of papers published at ITC over the last ten years or so, there does appear to be a large swing away from board test topics and towards more IC-oriented technical papers. Why is that? Could one argue that board test became a solved problem after the introduction of the IEEE 1149.1 standard [1]? Hardly, since that original standard, as useful as it has proven to be, was still deficient in a number of areas and is being actively extended even today. The most notable recent extensions are the 1149.4 analog interface and the proposed P1149.6 extension for high speed digital signals. As an ASIC vendor, we work with many different companies on implementing ASICs in a variety of applications. Often, given the choice, our customers would opt not to implement boundary scan on their designs. It’s not clear if this is indicative of the perceived difficulty in using the approach, a lack of familiarity with the tools involved, the use of other more desirable solutions, or some combination of the above. Clearly, boards are not going untested. So, either via JTAG or other means, solutions exist for board level testing. But, if board manufacturers are opting for non-1149.1 test procedures, the question remains, why do we not see more active research in this area? There are probably at least two reasons:

ITC is Cool
ITC IS COOL. How can this be, you ask? This is the International Test Conference’s 36th year, which makes it a middle-aged conference; and, as anyone who has ever been middle-aged knows, being cool at this time of life is a serious challenge. Combovers, designer sunglasses, wheel spinners, and Good Charlotte CDs aren’t really options for a conference, so how can ITC be cool? A simple answer is ...
متن کاملBoard Test Is NOT Mature
The question is whether “Board Testing has become stagnant” as an ITC topic. The implication is that the board test community has nothing new to invent, report or say that would be of use to the ITC community at large, and board test engineers in particular. This leads to the charge that ITC is really only an IC testing conference. While I must accept the fact that the IC content of ITC is much...
متن کاملIs Board Test Worth Talking About?
From the viewpoint of a casual observer, it appears that less than 10% of the paper and panel presentations at ITC in the last 10 years have been related to board test. Of those, the majority have focused on boundary scan testing. Note that both IEEE 1149.1 and IEEE 1149.4 are standards for IC’s. Board testing continues to be a significant challenge for producers of both high volume and high co...
متن کاملPanel: "Board Test and ITC: What Does the Future Hold?"
The International Test Conference is becoming a chip-centric event. This is what you might expect to be told. And if you ask which conference a board test engineer should attend in order to get information about innovation in the field of board test, the answer may be: there are several exhibitions dealing with electronic manufacturing, there you can find what you are looking for. Unfortunately...
متن کاملIntroduction ITC 1996 Lecture Series on Unpowered Opens Testing
This is the second year of an ITC experiment, the ITC Lecture Series on Unpowered Opens Testing (UOT). Open solder joints on printed circuit boards have become a frustrating problem in today’s era of advanced component packaging. This forum brings condensed technical and product information to board test engineers (and their managers) that will be immediately useful in their daily endeavors.
